New Beginnings Volume 7 of 2023

TRAINING

These are three important distinctions, especially when they are offered in the workplace and your company is paying for the services for you.  Let me explain why that is an issue.

Training typically involves learning how to successfully complete a process.  It can include processes such as using a particular piece of equipment; how to handle a complaint or a return purchase; how to close out a cash register, and many, many more.  Training is specific.  Two different trainers present the same content with the intention to produce the same result – the employee’s ability to successfully perform the process as is required in their job description.  No problem here.

MENTORING

Mentoring involves someone who is experienced and successful who will take another less experienced employee under their wing to show them how he/she, the mentor, does things.  You can imagine it as the mentor taking employees by the hand and showing them the way!

There can be some variation with different mentors.  Two mentors in the same company may have different styles, different approaches in reaching the same goals.  They may also have different styles and approaches to resolving the same issues.  Often these differences are aligned with the mentors’ unique preferences, skills and limitations.  Depending on how well the student can identify with and embrace the mentor’s style and approach, the outcome with different employees may not be the same even with the same mentor.  Selecting mentors who are a good match with the employee is important to the outcome of the relationship.

COACHING

This is the one that I would like to address with a word of caution.  Typically, when a coach works with a client, the client pays for the session and all of the focus is supporting the client in reaching the client’s goals.  When a third party is paying for the sessions, there can be confusion around who sets the agenda or the goals.

If your employer pays for the sessions with the intentions of your developing a particular mindset, approach, and results to work successfully within the company, it often becomes more of a teaching, training, mentoring relationship rather than a coaching relationship.  The only way this wouldn’t be true is if the employee being coached wants the same outcome as the company.  Then the coach is helping the employee develop the mindset, strategy, and emotional competence to achieve the mutually agreed upon outcome.

Companies often provide coaching services to their C-suite executives and upper-level managers as part of their employment packages.  I have had the good fortune to work in companies who paid for coaching for their executives with no involvement in the agenda or goals of the executive being coached.  This is the best solution for the best outcome for both employer and employee.

The reality is that when employees are getting their needs met in a particular company, they tend to stay with a company and deliver their best work.  On the other hand, when the coaching sessions reveal that employees would really prefer to work somewhere else or do another kind of work, it is still in the best interest of the company for the company and employee to part ways.

Trust is a critical part of the coaching relationship, and the client (employee) must know that the coach has his/her best interests at heart.

The STUFF of Life!

Finally, relief from the heat, some rain, and the promise of fall weather is in the air.    In Louisiana where we really only have two seasons, summer and spring, I often wonder what it is like to live where you have four seasons!

Fall and spring time are great times here because the weather is ideal for festivals.  Festivals are a huge part of our Louisiana culture.  We just learned that the newest festival to come to our area is the French Bread Festival in Jeanerette, Louisiana…home of LeJeune’s Bakery, open since 1884 with five generations serving their community.  That is amazing.

If you go to Jeanerette for some really good French Bread from LeJeune’s take the time to stop by Cooper Street Coffee.  Great place.  If you are really lucky, someone will be playing music while you are there.
